The Thistle & Shamrock

You won’t find many places in the Midwest with a selection of fish like this. Food: frog legs to start. Phewww. These were incredible! Piping hot, lightly battered, perfectly seasoned. You’ve got to get them. Found the lil booties on them funny as hell too 😂 I got the combo plate of white lake perch (I believe) and fried cod. Both pretty good. I don’t think I have the best opinion on perch. You can’t go wrong with the cod here. It’s definitely a solid spot for it! Sides of potato pancake and coleslaw were alright. Service: Pretty shocking how bad it was honestly. Pubs tend to have more straightforward and confident servers than trendy joints. It seemed like wait staff was working their first week though. Made for an awkward time. Bartender and server didn’t even know about their monthly cocktail - which is literally looks you dead in the face when you walk in the front door. Atmosphere: fun, lively pub atmosphere. Great place for watching a game or something else lively like their trivia. However, it may be noisy and hard to hear your table if you’re hard of hearing.

Dec 2023 - came here for the fish fry. It was great. The potato pancakes could improve but the service was lovely as always. Kams usually makes it into our St. Paddy plans one way or another. They usually have music - this year was no exception. There are always great bartenders and a good selection of food if you are hungry. I enjoy the 2 bar areas...they generally have different vibes. I have been coming here sporadically over the last decade... they usually show packer games as well and that is always a fun time.

Alright so the atmosphere might not be on par with most 5 star restaurants, but few 5 ***** restaurants come close to this place. Clam/fish chowder, best in town. Haddock absolutely great. My wife said het coconut shrimp was great. My buddy said his Walleye was really good. I only wish this place was closer to home. I want to try those Frog legs.

Great fish fry! I believe Tracy was our server and she was definitely on her game. She was there when you needed her & didn’t hover. Perfect service! He took her recommendation and ordered flounder and he enjoyed it. He even said the flounder was better than my meal. I got a combo plate of perch & fried cod loins. I liked them all but if I had to pick a favorite it would be the perch. The batter on all 3 were light and very flavorful. The greens on the plate are sunflower greens and they have a meaty yet great flavor. These greens are organically grown and delicious. I definitely recommend trying The Thistle & Shamrock. You definitely won’t go away disappointed.
